Problem with WinXP profiles

In the last few weeks I have been having a problem with profiles logging in
and out. If I login first others cannot seem to login after when I try to
switch users. The request for new user bounces back to the list of users. I
can log back in without a problem but others cannot. If I reboot than others
can log in but I may have a problem logging in. It seems like WinXP is not
releasing one user so that another can login. I have tried logging myself off
but it seems to that no one once they are logged in can log off. I downloaded
from MS the hive release but it does not seem to be working. I have a Dell
Dimenison 4600C 3Gig processor, 512 megs of RAM. I have tried system restore
and it works for a short period of time and than the problem comes back. My
original profile became corrupted for some reason and programs would not open
and in IE6 when I typed in Orbitz url and hit Go the entire window
disappeared. I thought that it might be spy ware or malware or a virus so I
ran Norton AV Adaware and Spy ware Doctor and nothing was found. Everything
was working fine in the other four profiles I have on the machine. Is there a
patch for logging off profiles and releasing them? This is a fairly new
problem but it is a pain for others to not be able to use fast user
switching. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
