Add me to the list of people who's machines were rendered UNUSABLE by Microsoft. Thanks Ramesh, your suggestion of removing update 890859 did the trick.

If this kind of update is installed automatically, Microsoft should
make an easier recovery tool -- say, make the Last Good Configuration
or Safe Mode actually work!!!

Microsoft should be held accountable for this kind of irresponsibility.
Essentially, they are requiring you to carry a bootable XP cd at all
times.
