Windows XP SP2: Windows Update Doesn't Work

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hello,

I was able to repair my Windows XP installation (see my posting earlier this
week), thank you all very much.

I was not able to properly slipstream the XP SP1 setup CD I had. For unknown
reasons, the CD I prepared a number of times was "invisible" - the files
there could not be read or even visible! Windows Explorer reported CD as
empty, but any CD burning software reported that there is no empty space
left there.

OK, back to the new problem in hand.

I was prepared to see some applications not working. Immediately after
logging in I installed SP2, and everything looked OK, however, some
applications refused to start (posting some never seen messages about bad
drivers, etc.). MS Office is dead. Antivirus software also dead. MS
Antispyware - in coma. SpyBot S&D, however, survived. OK, I can reinstall
the stuff, while it seems now like a major headache.

But the main problem is - the Windows Update doesn't work anymore!
IE displays the following text and stops:

"Checking for the latest version of the Windows Update software...
Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this
time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security
warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software."

That's it. Nothing I tried could bring it back to life.

How to fix that? Is that possible to fix the whole Windows Installation,
bringing back all (or most, or some) broken application to life?

Thanks in advance,
DP
