Audio problem upgrading from Windows 98 to XP

I upgraded a friend's computer from an original install of WIndows 98 to
Windows XP SP2 and now no audio will play. I've checked all likely culprits
and been through the troubleshooting tree without success.

I'm a longtime developer with experience primarily on UNIX systems and
Windows NT/2000, so I'm not totally computer illiterate, but I have no
previous experience with 95/98 or XP.

Computer: Gateway - Intel x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 - 700 MHz
BIOS: 4w/4SB0x0.15A.0017.P12 - 12/21/1999
SMBIOS version: 2.1
RAM: 128 Mb

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition 5.1.2600 - Service Pack 2
Sound: Cereative SB Live! Value (WDM) on IRQ 9
Driver: C:\windows\syste32\drivers\emu10k 1m.sys (5.12.01.3300) (built
during XP install on 2/27/2005).
Under System Information/Software Environment/Signed Drivers it lists:
    Creative emu10k1m.sys Version 5.1.2535.0 - 7/1/2001

I get no system sounds, no CD audio, no DVD audio, and no playback on
Windows Media 9 or RealPlayer, including previously saved MP3 and other audio
files.

The system was playing all of the above before the upgrade.

Every diagnostic looks good, but - still no audio.
Is there any driver upgrade that I need to install from Creative?
Any other suggestions or diagnostics I can try?
