Let's start with your virus definitions. Open Norton Antivirus
and look on the System Status page. Here you'll see the date when
you're virus definitions were last updated. If it's within the
last week, then you're still receiving automatic updates. If it's
not, then you've got a problem. Also what date is listed under
Full System scan? Once again, if it's not within the last week
you've got a problem.

Why do you say "no support is available"? Have you contacted
Symantec support about this problem? Were you told that, even
though you paid to renew your subscription through July of 2005,
you're not entitled to tech support?

On the question of uninstalling Norton and using another
companies products, that's up to you. The most important concern
with any of these products is whether they're doing what they're
supposed to do and doing it quietly. In your case, Norton seems
to have failed on both counts.

The best free firewall is Zone Alarm. It's available here:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp
The best free antivirus program is AVG. It's available here:
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

Finally, it wouldn't suprise me if after installing another
antivirus program and uninstalling Norton that the pop up problem
stopped.

Keep us posted on your progress
