You'll hear as many recommendations as there are people replying to your
message. Personally I've heard good things about AVG's product although I
haven't used it myself. I did read that they have changed the product and the
version that was free must now be purchased and the free version is
different.

If you're going to pay for antivirus, I advise you search reliable resources
for reviews and comparisons before you choose. If you have a favorite
computer magazine, check their past articles or check out the online sites
for PC Magazine (www.pcmag.com) or PC World (www.pcworld.com). Finally,
download demos of the products you are interested in and test them out. No
matter how good a product is for someone else, if you can't figure out how to
use it or it doesn't work properly on your particular system configuration,
it's a waste of money.

My personal preference is TrendMicro pcCillin. We've used their product for
several years on dozens of systems and never had an issue. The auto-updates
work flawlessly and it seems to require less overhead than either McAfee or
Norton.
