Hello,
I had the same problem : I never have installed brother printer
driver, but as I found in the map of my work's network, there's a
brother printer shared by a computer. I think one day I might have
cliqued on it and installed the linked driver. The result was that
there were permanently two progs running in background :
C:\windows\system32\brsvc01a.exe and C:\windows\system32\brss01a.exe
aparently parts of the BrSplService - Brother Industries Ltd.
I've tried all the general solutions you enumerate or similar ones.
The problem is that I never found any mention of these files or
services in registry or in any file on my computer even with tools like
hijackthis, so it was impossible to desinstall them correctly.
As I have ressources problem as anyone using windows, I used to
manually kill the two programs each time I started windows, and didn't
make problem. But I became fed up of it, tried to contact Brother
hotline, but got no answer, as I'm not a customer (I never used one of
their printers !).
I finaly tried to delete the two files, after backing them up, as they
didn't seem to be indispensable since I could kill them without hanging
the system. I then tried to reboot, but the system (windows xp pro)
never wanted to finish is boot, as XP doesn't print anything about what
it's doing I don't know where it blocked. Hopefully I could restart in
safe mode ("Mode sans échec", I'm french) and restore the files and
everything came back well.
I think the solution you propose is a general one and is not adapted
to this particular case. I don't know the way this service is installed
and started as there is nowhere any mention of these files on my
computer disk. I don't understand why Brother configure their driver
this way : it's easier to deactivate any spyware or virus than this
driver !
Now I'm really embarassed because one day I thought I had found the
real solution to my problem by modifying some registry entries, and
re-deleted the C:\windows\system32\brsvc01a.exe and
C:\windows\system32\brss01a.exe files, forgetting I had some times ago
deleted my backups.
Now I have a computer that can only finish its start in safe mode. I
tried to use the repair option on my windows XP install without any
change. I tried to re-install XP with a big change ! My computer didn't
start even in safe mode ! So I re-reinstalled WIn XP and came back to
the situation where it start only in safe mode. I've looked everywhere
on the net without any usefull info until I found yours with great
hope, but finaly nothing works.

There's another thing I noticed while seeking the web. It's that most
of the pages where I found the keywords brsvc01a.exe brss01a.exe where
specialized in hijackthis logs analyse, and what is strange is that
these files are always mentionned in the running processes without any
corresponding entry in the scan. I find it very strange for a legal
application.
If anyone has a solution to my problem he will be welcome. Even if
someone can provide me the two files I deleted, I will be very happy to
see them running on a working computer !
