I downloaded some software from my DSL provider here in the US, bellsouth to
be exact.
The software was meant to link two home pc's together for file/print
sharing, via the home network. It didn't work.
Once installation was completed, I was asked to restart to PC. I did. Upon
entering my profile I recieved a pop up message which told me I didn't have
enough system resources to complete the installation.
My PC is running about 50% slower. My taskbar is now gone. I cannot drag and
drop files on my desktop. When I try to run system restore I get a message
saying that System restore is not runnning and cannot protect my PC and that
I must restart.
I cannot restore deleted items from my recycle bin. My Anti-virus software
will also not start, even when I go to c:\program files and try to manually
start it.
I ran the trend micro online virus scan and that seems to show up nothing. I
even tried starting in safe mode and trying to run system restore throught
that and it did not work either.
I have gone throught the start up and pretty much validated all the entries.
I am at an utter loss.
Here is a step by step guide to what I did and what I have tried to do to
fix it:
What did you install? Bellsouth File and print sharing (
http://help.bellsouth.net/sdcuser/asp/dsl/default.asp )
Click on "Home Networking", then in "Feateures", click on "File and Print
Sharing"
Did you double-check each task in task manager one? Yes, although I propably
should check it again.I used a site called sysinfo.org to check what the
tasks running were.
Did you check 'show processes for all users? Yes
What processes are using lots of memory? There were two system entries- one
saying system idle process and then one just called system. That concerned me
a little at the time.
Neither Adaware nor spybot have found anything and they're both upto date?
Both are up to date, Adaware found nothing, spybot found something but it was
unrelated to the problem, essentially some errant cookies.
Can you set Norton to do a boot-time scan? (I'm not sure what Norton can
do)? I use MacAfee on the one that has the problems, but I also have a copy
of Norton and I couldn't install it.
Are you using a modem or router? 2wire Homeportal modem
Is it wireless\wired? Its wired to the PC via a ethernet card.
Is it XP Pro or Home? XP Pro
Do you run windows update? Yes
Hae yu got XP SP2 on? XP SP2
Can someone point me in the right direction??
