-- All the Best, Kelly (MS-MVP) Troubleshooting Windows XP http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com "David Schrader" <dfschrader@comcast.net> wrote in message news:%23yd2ncM$EHA.2984@TK2MSFTNGP09.phx.gbl... I apologize - the first time I sent this without a "Subject" and I have no idea where it went (the great "bit bucket" in the sky I hope). This time I have included a topic as well as some further comments (which I have underlined). Warning: I am cross posting to 2 Windows XP groups in which I believe I am most likely to find someone knowledgeable enough to be able to have an idea how to answer my question. Brief background: For a number of reasons - mostly because I wasn't smart enough to plan as far ahead as Bill Gates and make my "boot drive" bigger that 5 GBytes and when it came time to install XP-SP2 there wasn't sufficient room - I'm finishing a full re-installation of XP (on a 30 GByte partition). An oddity appeared after I installed SP2. And I haven't been able to find any solution. I prefer the "old Classic" appearance - call me odd but it just seems a bit cleaner to me and I don't need all the "extra stuff" that's posted on the left. And that of course is the problem. Every time I open a new "window" there is a "panel" on the left with either the "Search Assistant" or the "Summary Statistics" (System Tasks; Other Places; and Details). Okay, before you ask, "Yes, I did use the "Tools | Folders Options" but it didn't really make any significant different. It only seemed to work for the "My Computer" and nothing else. When I double click on a drive on "My Computer" I get the dual pane with the "Search Assistant" in the left pane - no matter what I do. If I click the "Folder Button" I get the "Folder" pane on the left but in both cases I get "To start your search, follow the instructions in the left pane." If I go to the "Address Bar" at the top I can then scroll up or down to the "root" of the directory where I was when I started and *then* the files will be shown in the right hand screen and not before and the left hand pane is removed. The same thing happens when I double click on any folder. Talk about frustrating and hard to get any kind of work done. It's not just twice as hard to work it's three or four times as hard. To get anywhere I need to go I have to "Explore" find the place I need, go "up" one level and then do an "Explore" on that directory. Then I have to click the "Folder" button and then scroll to the directory where I want to work. This may be fine for a single task but for multiple tasks it becomes a nightmare. It isn't much fun if you have to open multiple windows. It also makes it hard to remember exactly where or what step in a process you had reached(when you are constantly trying to figure out where you are). I haven't been able to find anywhere, other than those already mentioned, where I can turn this off. It seems as if somehow it got stuck with "Search" mode on. It wasn't on before (and I don't remember turning it off while I was running SP1). I installed SP2 and the release notes don't say anything about that - or, if they do maybe I missed it because I haven't a clue about what it's called. So, anyone in either of these groups, have a helping hand for someone who is looking for a way to turn off the left hand panel so that when he clicks on a folder all he sees is the files that are in it? Many thanks. David
