Cannot Close Explorer Bar/Pane!

Hi all,

Running XP SP2, fresh install (yesterday), working great, but I can't
get rid of this silly explorer bar/pane!

I can select View, Explorer Bar, and any of the choices ... they all
work great ... but when I close them, another pane appears there,
offering me choices of

System Tasks
Other Places
Details

This is the only system I've ever encountered this on. How do I make
the explorer bar/pane go away permanently?
