Hi Chris,

Here are some steps to take for troubleshooting floppy drive problems
in WinXP.
1. Check to see if the drive is unchecked in Tweakui.
2. Check the system to make sure it is free of a Virus or Spyware.
3. Restart the computer and tap the F8 Key while the BIOS information
is going by. At the Windows Advanced Options menu select Safe Mode
Command prompt. Put a Floppy disk in the A:\ drive and type DIR and
press enter. You should see the directory tree of the floppy disk.
4. Restart your computer in Safe Mode using the instruction in step 3.
Go to Start - Run and type devmgmt.msc to enter Device Manager.
Locate and delete floppy drives *and* the floppy disk controllers.
Restart to see if Windows re-detects properly.
5. Set the BIOS to detect the Floppy Drive a startup. Insert an old
Win98 Boot Disk and restart the system. If the known good disk is not
detected this would indicate some type of hardware problem, weather it
be the Drive it self, cables or Disk Drive Controller. A Win98 Boot
Disk can be downloaded at www.bootdisk.com
6. CMOS settings are incorrect: write down all settings, then re-set
to defaults, restart to CMOS, re-enter the written down settings.
7. CMOS settings are incorrect: if "Swap Floppies" is enabled, disable
it.
8. Ribbon cables are 180 degrees out, or otherwise mis-aligned/tilted:
to correct, properly position connectors and tracer color wire always
to pin number 1 at both ends.
