Default e-mail settings

I am trying to get my hotmail account to be my default mail service but seem
unable to do so, I have tried a few things but may have made it worse, when I
click on a persons name on a website that would normally take yuo into
hotmail, it just locks up on my ............. any one have any thoughts ?
