Maybe we need some more info before replying to your question.
In the old days we used an external modem normally connected to COM2,
the second of the two serial ports available in the PC.
Later internal modems became available with a build in serial port you
could assign a number etc to the port.
If you preferred to use COM1 or COM2 you had to disable the serial port
in the PC.
Again later cheap software modems became popular that can fake serial
ports with an even higher number.
So I think it's best you tell us what hardware you have and what you
like to do and why.
