Answers:
  1) No idea. I started the defrag & walked away. I checked on it once, it
was at 46%. Started work on a destop machine. It completed in about an hour.
Went back to check on the notebook, it was still at 46% (after 2 hours) and
had a "non responding" on the title bar. Tried to close, but whole machine
had locked up.
 2) Was running Norton Speed Disk from Systemworks 2003
 3) Gateway tech support had be create a Windows XP Home boot floppy, but it
didn't work. I also tried your suggestion of Bart PE, however the CD drive
won't boot anything. I've never had to restore anything previously on the
machine in two years, but it is readable and bootable on my desktop, and I
used files from it to create the boot floppy (my desktop has XP Pro).
