Recovery of files on unbootable XP box

Having removed some spyware from registry I find that my XP-professional OS
will now not boot. To my knowledge all files are still OK, I just can't
access them. Safe mode etc does not do it. Computer gets stuck on " starting
windows XP " dialogue screen.

I have OEM installation CD and have tried the Recovery Console when booting
from the CD, this gives me a version of DOS ( I believe ) but it does not
seem to allow me to navigate outside the windows directory.

Does anyone know what best course of action is ? All I want to do basically
is makes sure I save some files that are in my documents and on the desktop.
Then I can re-install the whole thing.

Advice is appreciated
