Double-click to open

On my brother-in-law's XP Pro SP2 machine, I keep setting "double-click to
open" in folder options, but the setting will not stick for long. It keeps
going back to "single-click to open" behavior, even though the setting has
not changed in folder options. I looked through all of the mouse settings in
control panel, but didn't find anything that might be causing the problem.
