You CAN put the XP OS in two folders on the same partition, but it leads to
conflicts, since items like the %ProgramFiles% folder are the same path on
both systems, and apps like IE can corrupt.

On the format issue, formatting C: will remove NTLDR, NTdetect.com and
Boot.ini, all necessary files for the boot manager to find the XP OS files.
Removing other partitions would not hurt.
