An external hard drive is either attached, or it's not. This condition is
indicated by its presence in the device list in (start/run, type:)
Devmgmt.msc.
Any device that has a 'conflict', (usually meaning its driver needs
replacement) shows a red icon with an exclamation point. Backup is probably
using this to show a problem on that drive (not attached?, driver problem?)
