logging on problems

When logging in on my laptop the machine tries to log on as an old user
using the classic logon screen, even though I have changed this to the new
logon prompts under XP. The classic logon screen tries to login an old user,
fails and then the error message disappears behind the "windows is starting
up" screen. Using the Alt+tab keyboard combination brings up the failed
logon attempt, When the error is cleared the new login screen appears and I
can log in as normal.

I have tried to change the settings under the user settings of control
panel, but this has no effect. The user it is trying to log in as has had
its password removed and the account has been removed, but the problem will
not go away.

If anyone has had this problem and knows how to get arround it please reply,
as I do not want to reinstall windows to clear this error.
