combo drive won't write to CD-RW

Here goes- I can no longer back up my Quicken files onto CD-RW. After using
the Backup function from Quicken, designating the D drive as the backup
location, Quicken tells me that the files have been backed up successfully,
but there is no writing activity in the drive.
When there is no disc in the drive, clicking on D drive will tell me that
there are files waiting to be wriiten onto CD. But when I put the CD in the
drive, the Windows CD writing wizard tells me that there is no disc in the
drive.
If I try to directly drag and drop a file from the C drive (hard disc) onto
the D drive (combo CD-RW/DVD) window, then it will write onto the disc with
no problem. If I'm using a CD-R (not RW), everything works fine.
I'm using a Dell 8600 laptop, Windows XP Professional with SP2 update. CD
burning software is Roxio Direct CD. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
