problems downloading xp service pk2

I have tried 3 times to download service pack 2. each time the install has
failed, and each subsequent time my computer has had more and more problems.
After the last time, It won't even take me as far as the log on screen. The
solution appears to be to reformat back using the original install disc for
windows xp, thus loosing everything I had in the process.
