Open task manager, and monitor the cpu useage.
If cpu useage goes up while idle , make note of the processes running, and
which one/ones are eating up your processor useage.
Also, make sure you have no external peripherals connected, like joysticks,
gamepads, anything that might do keyboard emulation.
And of course, maintenance that should be routine:
Chkdsk
Cleanup
Make sure temporary internet folder, and temp folder, in your user folder,
are empty.
Spyware scans ( you already mentioned, make sure definition files are up to
date).
Defrag
You could also possible have a bad stick of ram - you can download a memory
tester like memtest86, it installs on a floppy and runs from there, and will
report any errors if you have them in your ram. For a stable system, there
should be no errors.
Another thing to check - go to start/run/ and type in msconfig. Go to your
startup tab, and see what all you have starting up. This is a good
troubleshooting tool to see if you have something loading on startup causing
problems. You can deselect what looks obvious that you really don't need
starting up, and reboot. Run your system for a while, and if it is ok, then
add each back in, running for a while, until it starts acting up again -
then most likely the one you just added back is causing problems.
Just some ideas, hope something in here helps ya.
