Hey Scott!
I'm getting the exact same problem and I would like to note a couple of
similarities between our situations. I also recently (about a week before
this problem) installed SP2 as an automatic update from the MS website. I
also noticed the error message after the installation of a new program (In my
case FlipAlbum Pro 5.0) Actually, the first time I encountered this problem
was during my first reboot after the SP2 installation. This just happened to
be the reboot following my FlipAlbum Pro installation.
Scott, Do you remember seeing a message box sometime after the SP2 install,
but before the logon problem which said something to the effect of
"Insufficient System Resources available to allow updates to the registry.
Any further requests to update the Windows registry will be ignored" ??? I
got a message box to that effect (don't remember the exact wording, but
similar to what I typed) the day before I had the logon problem.
I don't know what to do with this machine. My XP Pro installation had been
FLAWLESS without a single lockup/crash for more than a year prior to this
problem! Now, in the process of trying to resolve this issue, I cannot get
the Windows System Restore to do go back to ANY prior dates, my Acronis
HD/partition backup has failed to initialize, and I have also deleted my user
profile (thinking it was corrupt due to the error we're both now
experiencing) which I have now found out also deletes all my email and
related system settings. My computer is now WORTHLESS to me. I now seem to
have no way to retrieve YEARS of work and data.
