Norton Ghost works well with many.
You may try reinstalling it.

In any event you should always have back-ups of important data, not
just when installing a Service Pack.
If you can not get Ghost working a real basic way to back-up data is
simply copy the data to CD.

Contact HP BEFORE installing a Service Pack, depending on the age of
your computer, there is a fix you should use.
