I decided to use the nuclear option - I uninstalled SP2!
However, the problem persists so it must be something else. The fact that
the windows open fine with Netscape indicates a IE6 probelm.

There is no error message - the window opens and then just closes staright
away. It is not restricted to the BBC site - all user initiated javascript
windows behave the same.
