Just get a blank screen after XP SP2. No icons or even the Start bar

Hi

I have a laptop that just has a blank screen after XP SP2 install.

Machine boots up and you login and then ................... nothing!

Any ideas? I have tried loging into Administrator in Safe mode and you get a
bit more. However, 'control panel' appears to have vanished.
