Hi all. My wife was on her Window XP SP1 computer when it started
acting funny. About 50 instances of Outlook started opening at once. There
was some reference on screen about running Outlook in Safe Mode, but I
didn't catch all of it. I rebooted the PC to see if that would clear things,
but when it restarted, there was a 'Windows has encountered a serious error'
message, and it rebooted itself. I tried clicking on the 'Load last working
configuration' option, as well as 'Safe Mode', but the PC would continuously
reboot itself at that screen. I tried a 'repair' option after booting off
the Windows XP CD, and again nothing happened. After rebooting for a fair
few times, it finally continued to load. When it got to the Desktop, all of
her icons had disappeared, and it is as if it is a brand new system. Norton
Internet and Anti Virus still work, as do a couple of other apps, but many
do not. I tried a system restore, but nothing happens. If I add shortcuts to
the desktop and restart the PC, there is an error message saying that no
profile is loaded and one will be saved after turning off the PC. All her
documents are still there, although in the default 'C\Documents and
Settings\ folder. All e-mail appears to be lost, as Outlook Express has no
accounts set up on it and no e-mails in the 'Inbox'.
Any suggestions, or is it a case of biting the bullet and starting all over.
Thanks
John
