Changing the CPU or motherboard usually requires reactivation before you can
do updates. However, you SHOULD have gotten a cryptic message about it when
you tried to update. If you got the CPU from your OEM then they should
provide an OEM XP update for you to use. Otherwise, use the exact same
retail CD used to perform the original installation and do an in-place
repair/update so you can reactivate. It must be the same CD, or you will
probably get locked out from using XP completely (you can not use another,
and there might be no recovery from the lockout). The last resort
alternative is to purchase the full retail version of Pro (Home will not be
sufficient), but that might not work to save the original content if XP was
never properly licensed. You should always backup your data files in case
you have to reinstall programs. Better yet, create a bootable image copy HDD
of your original C drive (just in case, you get the image copy utility only
from the HDD manufacture because no Windows utility will do it properly). If
you create an image drive, then do a FULL check for file structure damage
AND for bad sectors BEFORE you try to boot to it (else it might blue
screen). Do not format your original C drive until after you've successfully
used and fully tested the image backup drive as a boot device for
performance errors.
