It sounds like you had a very sloppy windows installation before SP2, and/or
lots of viruses and spyware on your system.
If I was getting all of the problems you listed, I would start with a clean
WinXP install and then apply SP2 before re-installing any of your software
applications. (Of course, backup all your data files first.)
