WinXP Pro
8/26/04 - machine booted and ran normally. Then after 3 or 4 hours one (1)
folder on the only drive/partition, when attempting to access, reported
"Drive not formatted. Do you want to format now?". Answered "no". I could
browse any other folder on same drive with no problem.
Attempted to run chkdsk to no avail. Rebooted to run chkdsk from command
prompt in safe mode. Machine has not restarted since. Dloaded a Gateway
utility "GWScan" which found "too many errors to continue."
Can boot the machine off of the CD rom using WinXP ("Repair" option) or
Partition Magic CD. PM sees the partition and usage information but cannot
see any details due to "too many errors".
I need to recover some data off of this drive before reformatting and
reinstalling.
Any ideas as to what could cause this error and or how to recover?
