After finding nothing of any use throughout much of the Microsoft
newsgroups, MSDN and microsoft.com Knowledgebase and receiving no reply, not
even an acknowledgement from support@microsoft.com (previously and active
support contact):

I Have Removed SP2 And the Problem Has Disappeared

If anybody wants to argue that it was not SP2 causing this problem , please
explain how removing the service pack would fix the problem.

Moreover if anyone is reading this and thinking I've just not configured the
new security correctly, I have. The programs that failed did not cease to
function correctly, they caused a BSOD STOP error.

Also, before the service pack was installedthe programs were correctly
configured to access the internet through the latest version of ZoneAlarm
(not one of those listed by Ms as a conflict hazard), and since the new SP
(quite rightly) disabled the windows firewall when ZoneAlarm was detected,
the existing software firewall remained constant, so the new windows firewall
should have had no effect.

I think I'll wait for: the next release of SP2, SP3, The Next Version Of
Windows, or until I can afford a Mac, which ever comes first.

;This OS is really starting to get on my tits, why should a service pack
break an otherwise (mostly) useable system.
