Help restore my XP home system please?

Hi, I recently installed an XP home upgrade from the microsoft upgrade
site and upon reboot got the blue screen error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process System process terminated
unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000080 (0x00000000
0x00000000).

I've read a lot of background and tried all the posted fixes. My
system runs XP Home with SP1 installed (some people have suggested
installing the IE SP6 but I've since read this is included with SP1).
I've also tried an xp repair (option not given to me) and system
restores (all fail). NOW, I'm getting desperate as the last thing I
want to do is reinstall xp (I've got over 500 programs on my machine -
don't want to start from scratch!).

I can access safe mode, and have a removable HD - is there any way I
can ghost the system as it is, install XP Home from fresh (or even
upgrade to XP pro) and then use the ghost image to bring back all my
old files???

Another thought - is it possible to simply copy my current hard disk,
fresh install xp, and then copy back the program files and old
registry to overwrite the fresh one?

Any help would be greatly appreciated (if you are a company I will
even pay you to fix this) as I have hundreds of thousands of pounds
worth of software I currently can't use!
