SP2 Login extremely slow

Hi,

I just updated DELL Inspiron 600m notebook computer with XP SP1
installed to SP2 using the SP2 RTM .EXE. I am having many weird
problems with the SP2. The most annoying of them is very long and very
slow login. XP SP2 boots up quickly and I get the login window just
fine. When I click on my name and tried to login, the background
changes and I hear the windows start-up music but then the machine
seems to just freeze. There is hard disk activity so it is doing
something but that also stops after a minute or two. After about 10
minutes or so, the machine finally logs in and I get the Windows
desktop as expected.

After logging in, everything seems quick and fast. There are no other
problems. I can access the internet. I can use the printer. Everything
is working normally. Except for one problem.

In the Control Panel -> Network connections, all my network
connections are missing. I expect to see Local Area Connection , Local
Area Connection 2 etc. there but I don't see anything there. I also do
not see the little network icon that appear in the system tray when
there is a network connection. Internet explorer, yahoo messenger etc.
network applications are working fine though.

The delay I get at the very beginning seems to be similar to some
other login problem I had with another Windows 2000 machine in the
past. At that time, the problem was that the windows would sit idly
for a long time at "Preparing network connections..." message. This
seems to suggest that these two problems may be similar. However, I
can't find out a solution to this problem online.

thanks,
Osho
