Helping friend, am not familiar with XP. System hangs
after opening screen leaving it blank with moveable cursor
arrow in centre.
Cannot boot in safe mode etc.
Amended boot sequence so that I could load from CD drive
which takes me to c:)windows. All initial files are both
preceded and followed by $. Many have d and a (which I
assume are file attributes) and they are 0Kb. DOS
commands are not recognised and I cannot find an
executable file to start windows.
Problem has arisen after going onto broadband and then
downloading AOL recommended protection software because of
repeated attack.
In my limited knowledge it looks as though an attack has
been successful. How can I recover personal data before
reloading system again?
Any help would be appreciated.
