*** Ok, that is not good at all - I think that's the level where it's
checking for bad sectors.

Search there for the word "days". :(
In other words, you might have to wait a VERY long time, if a HDD is in
really bad shape, for bad sectors to be compensated for.

This needs to be corrected (it may or may not be relavant, but needs
correction anyway), after the HDD is testing correct with the chkdsk /R
command.

I hope you kept a list of them. That might compound your problems, requiring
usage of sfc utility after the HDD is fixed up properly.

Likely, problems existed before and they were just exasperated (if that)
with the update process. However, if you've applied SP2 then you are
addressing your problems to the wrong newsgroup, and if so then you should
use the newsgroups you agreed to use if SP2 is installed.

This MUST be corrected. Chkdsk is not the problem, the HDD is the problem.

Not surprising!

No, it is probably very ill right now.

Yes, let chkdsk complete no matter how long it takes or until it returns
some sort of error. As indicated, that could take days. Just because you see
no HDD activity, even for a long time, does not mean chkdsk has failed or
crashed. If chkdsk reports errors and also reports that it can not complete
then your HDD is probably not recoverable. You likely need to think about
getting another HDD, but you can NOT clone your old one to the new one
(using ONLY the HDD mfgr's clone "copy" utility, no others will work) until
the HDD is readable on all sectors not marked as bad, so don't even try (it
will not work).
