Thanks Mary, but I tried Microsoft's suggestion. It did nothing to solve the
problem. I am using "up to date" Norton AV and regularly run Ad-Aware and
Spybot. I have a feeling it is some sort of hardware problem or incompatibility.
Something is clobbering my Windows installation.

I ran the WD utility to check the HD and Memtest to check the memory. Everything
appears to be OK. I did put in a new HD though, just in case.
