Reset the toolbar setting from Registry using this fix:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_toolbarfix.htm

Or, it is something else (I'm thinking of another possibility)

that was the first thing i tried!  i removed every checkmark and then added
them back one by one, trying all possible combos. next step?
