What exactly is the important stuff you want to backup.
If it is 'just' a bunch of 'data files' (ie Documents, Spreadsheets,
Database(Access?) files etc.) then maybe you should consider backing just
your datafiles to (say) a zip drive...

Then if your PC is stolen/totaly destroyed, You could buy a new one with a
new OS.
Install your software from the original disks, then restore your datafiles
from your zip disk.

If however, you want to backup and restore a working copy of ALL your data
AND your applications, Ghost will do the job just fine but will, as you say,
overwrite whatever operating system is pre-installed on your new PC.

Also, be warned that if the hardware on the new PC is significantly
different to your old one, restoring the ghost image to the new PC may cause
you problems, XP is fairly good at re-configuring itself, but there is a
limit...
