I don't have a definite answer for you, but here are a few questions that may
lead you to an answer for yourself (or at least a new question to ask):
Am I correct in thinking that it is acting the same as pressing Ctrl+Left?
What does it do if you have not selected any text? Does it still jump back a
word, or does it delete a single character?
What does pressing Ctrl+H do? (usually, it should be the same as Backspace)
Do Ctrl+Left and Ctrl+Right move you back and forward one word?
Are you selecting the text with the mouse, or by using Shift+Cursor keys, or
maybe selecting words by using Shift+Ctrl+Cursor? (If the last, you may have
a "sticky" Ctrl key, either hardware or software). Under Control Panel, check
"Accesibility Options" for "StickyKeys".
Is it doing this in ALL applications, or just some? For example, does it do
this in Notepad, or on the commandline in a CMD window?
What sort of keyboard do you have? Is it USB, PS/2, or on a laptop? Do you
have a different keyboard that you could plug in and try to see if it is the
keyboard itself?
Are you using any other input languages besides English?
