For about the 5th time in 3 months my PC has just stopped working properly.
I don't know what causes it and I don't know how to fix it.
I've read lots of posts on the same subject but haven't found any answers
yet.
When things go pear shaped, this is what happens:
1) windows explorer, IE6, outlook, outlook express, norton etc won't open
although other programs will
2) desktop icons just show the icon for when windows doesn't know what it is
3) explorer.exe has to be manually shut down every reboot
4) system restore won't open
5) everything that is still working works very slowly
6) all of the above applies to safe mode as well
I've been able to recover the system previously by getting rid of corrupt
avi's and when that wasn't the case, runnng chkdsk seemed to work. Not this
time though.
This time, after trying everything else and running chkdsk loads of times I
finally bit the bullet and loaded my XP Pro cd to reinstall. It got as far
as 'preparing for installation' and then seemed to stop. After a hour, I
gave up and rebooted and voila! a fully working system again.
I would really like to know what's going on here so that I can a) stop it
happening or b) know how to sort it when it does happen.
Thanks.
