Thank you, Willie, but this hasn't worked eithe.
But I would like to check into the administrator, owner control stuff; although I am the only user of this pc and am supposed to be the administrator, isn't it possible that some administrator category is corrupted--somehow?

This is a long shot, but have you tried to do all this in safe mode, with
system restore turned off? Make sure you have admin rights, and after
turning off system restore while in safe mode, look for remnants of old 2004
AV, and delete-uninstall. Then, possibly, you may have to restart in regular
mode, turn system restore back on after booting into windows, and attempt to
reinstall from there. I have called Symantec on one occasion, and was on
hold for 40 minutes, and paid the $29.95 support...so, I can sympathize with
you. Hope this does it for you, but I am skeptical. Please let me/us know.
