Trouble installing XP pro

Bought 3 XP pro OEMs from dealer and installed 2 in new boxes. Got
annoyed with Microsoft and put Linux on my test box. Now I want to
install the 3rd O.S. in the test box and it won"t take. Micosoft said
install XP after installing other systems, but that didnt work.
Popped Cmos battery and reformatted disc.
XP seems to install O.K. up to the point when it tells me to press a key
for reboot. When it reboots, it says error in installation.
I'm a 77 year old senior who's only been involved with computers a
couple of years and need basic instructions. After 8 tries , this
stubborn ignoramus will appreciate any help.
