flashing disc next to cursor

i have a flashing disc next to my cursor that seems to be prompting me to do something although i
do not know what. i am new to xp so any ideas would be appreciated. i have tried to open and close my cd or dvd drives, and also played or used each, but cannot get rid of the prompt.
