Have 160gb partitioned as C ( 20gb ) D (80gb ) E ( 60gb ) all using NTFS. I
have not formatted with FAT32.

System running ok. I decided to defrag whilsts downloading from internet.
Defragged partition C ( no problems ) D ( no problems ), so defragged E and
also left it downloading whilst I went out. Came back and system had
crashed ( presumably due to partition being full ? ). Config file in
system32 missing/corrupt. Had to reinstall XP. My
drive now only shows first partition ( C ). Properties of drive shows
partition C allocated, but the rest unallocated and therefore free. I had to
format partition C to reinstall, but did not format D and E as the options
were ( Format - C
or unallocated space ). What confuses me, is that I reinstalled about three
days ago and no problems.

At present, no drive has been assigned to the 'free space'. Everything moved
up two letters ( dvd drive was F now D, and cd drive was G now E - although
i have just reallocated them back ) as I suppose the drive was being seen as
one big space, so peripherals took the nnext available letters. So there is
space to assign the partitions back, although it's just one partition to
use.

Windows XP Does Not Recognize All Available Disk Space

deleted then created partition on C and reinistalled, but other partition
still not recognised. Well, it's recognised but only as free space.

Under My Computer/manage/computer management
/storage/disk management. Drive is split into two partitions. C - OS
installed on this, and Free Space ( which previously had D and E partitions
on ). I can partition this Free space and thereby create a new D partition,
but will all my data be lost ? Would I be better off using Partition Magic ?

At present I presume I still have all the data on the partitions, just
showing up that it's free. But I only have to make one mistake and it will
all be gone !

Any solution to get my lost partitions back ?

Can I back up this free space, in case I delete it for good ?
