Having just about launched my HP laptop out the window a few times
for this shut-off thing I can offer a couple of thoughts. In my case
the cooling fan had completely stopped working.
I opted not to haul it in for a (several) week repair and instead
bought a cooling pad for it. Worked great and totally eliminated the
heat related shut downs. I shopped around and bought one similar to
the one in this link:

There are several types and styles available and I decided to get one
which also included an AC adapter as well as USB power connecion. Do
a search if you are interested and you will find numerous models and
styles of cooling pads to choose from if you are so inclined to use
this method for solving the problem.
It is not the ideal solution but it works. The ideal solution in my
case turned out to be moth-balling (I am using a polite term here)
the HP and buying a new Toshiba. It turns out that the HP model I
had (N5190) turned out to be notoriously bad for all sorts of
hardware failure issues as I discovered when I started researching
the problem. It did not help that an HP desktop we had was also not
turning in a stellar performance and we had to replace some hardware
in it. I am beginning to think that HP should paint all of their
computers lemon-yellow, if you catch my drift, to provide truth in
advertising. But I digress.
Another option if your HP is so equipped is to enable "SpeedStep" to
slow down the processor and thus generate less heat. This was a
fairly good solution for times when I was runing on battery power and
did not need full speed. It seemed to prevent the heat from reaching
the critical turn-off point. Here is a little info about that (link
below). My HP had this option but it was not enabled so I had to
install the driver and set it up.
