Is it possible that you backed up your old operating system? That is
one of the options when upgrading, so that you can uninstall WinXP if
you so desire. Backing up the old OS might account for the loss of
space. Also, if you opted for a dual boot system, then XP would indeed
have partitioned your hard drive. In that case, Disk Management would
have shown at least two partitions.
