Help me please!

Some times when I try to start my computer instead of windows loading a black screen come up saying operating system not found. I'm using windows xp home edition, my computer is 2002 model and it didn't come with a disc to help reboot it. I've used a computer for years and know quiet about about them, but am not professional by no means. Any help trying to resolve my problem will be very appreciated , thanks msann
