Missing files/icons

Suddenly my recycle bin window no longer shows files or icons in the frame. I know there is something there because when I click on empty it ask if I want to delete a certain number of files from the recycle bin.

I have the same problem with the "my computer" folder. When opened I get the frame but no files or icons. The control panel was doing the same but for some reason the icons have reappeared. I can't figure out what I did to make them return.

Can anyone suggest a solution, short of reinstalling XP?
