Instead of pulling the plug, try holding off button for up to 5 sec. Most likely it will have the same effect.
I would say that you have some junk running and holding your Windows (unless it's a hardware problem...)
Try this:
as a little housekeeping.
Make sure that you are virus, spyware, and other junk --free.
Update your Windows:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
You could also check your system site (@ www.Compaq.com) for possible "recalls"
