I usually leave my computer running with monitor off when I am not using it.
But a few weeks ago I shut the computer down. When I did, it got as far the
where it gives the messege (Windows is shutting down"), and the harddrive ran
for a few seconds, then it stopped and I noticed that the mouse was locked up,
and the computer would not turn off, unless I hold the power button in for a few
seconds.
Now, I've never had this problem before with this computer, so I've been
concerned about it. I ran checkdisk both within windows xp and during bootup,
and it reported no problems (big surprise, right?). I defragged the harddrives
using diskkeeper, and still no postive solution. I went into the event logger
and the only definite problem I found was a cryptic error messege as follows:
The GLOGODrv service depends on the Parport service which failed to start
because of the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it
is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."
I can find no information on GLOGODrv.sys, what it does, or whether it is even
needed. I did find a web page that refers to the partport failing to start, and
it seems to be related to the parallel port. Now I have the parallel port
disabled because my printer is hooked up to my wifes computer, and I access it
through our home network. So I disable the parallel port to save on system
resources. When I go to the device manager, and select "view hidden devices",
GLOGODrv shows up, and is apparently in working order. However, the parport
shows the following error messege "This device is not present, is not working
properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)".
When I go to the command prompt and do an sc query for glogodrv, I get the
following response:
service name: glogodrv
type: 1 Kernel Driver
state: stopped
(not_stoppable, not_pausable, ignores_shutdown)
win32 code: 1068 (0x42c)
service exit code: 0 (0x0)
checkpoint: 0x0
wait hint: 0x0
When I looked up the win 32 code description for 1068, it says "The dependency
service or group failed to start. ERROR_SERVICE_DEPENDENCY_FAIL", which I
assume means that the parport service failed to start, and it is a service that
glogodrv (whatever that is) is dependent on.
I have updated my virus definitions, and run a virus check. Everything is ok.
I use Zonealarm Pro version 4.5.538.001 for my firewall.
Anyway, yesterday, I was using sonar 3, and when I exited the program I got the
blue screen of death (page fault 0 which I know is a memory error). When I went
to reboot the system, it would not boot up. I went into safe mode, and it would
just sit there afte rthe black screen came up with no icons or taskbar. I
manually turned the system off, turned off the power supply, and opened the box,
check all the connections, including the hardrives, cd/dvd drives, memory, the
graphics card, and the sound card. Everything checked out. All fans were
operating properly, and nothing was overheating.
I turned the system back on and managed to get the system to boot up, but my
graphics driver was corrupted, so I had to reinstall it and the control panel
for it. Then I ran some tests, first with runnign sound files. The sound card
works fine. I checked Windows mredia player 9, and it was not working properly,
so I had to reinstall it. It now works properly, but one of my games, unreal
tournament 2004 demo will stall out when I try to access the internet to
download servers for playing a game. I have to hard boot the system to restore
it. I also have Metal of Honor, and it works fine. It uses opengl, whereas
UT2004 uses direct x drivers. So I checked my direct x drivers, and the direct
x seems to check out ok, but that doesn't mean there is not a problem with them,
of course. Sonar seems to work fine now as well.
One last thing. I made a restore point after reintstalling the graphics driver,
but when I go to system restore, it doesn't show the calander like it is
supposed to, and doesn't show my restore point. I tried to make another one
with the same result. It just says "There are no restore points created yet for
this day. To restore immediately, pick another day and restore point, and then
try again.". But obviously, since there is no calander, I cannot pick another
day. Also, Dr. Watson shows no problems, nor does system info.
I might add as a final note that this system has been the best one I've ever
had. I've had it running for almost a year with virtually no problems
whatsoever. Here are the system specifications for my system:
Windows XP pro enterprise edition SP1 with all updates post XP (note, when I had
the problem with the graphics driver, I went to the Windows Xp update site and
scanned my system, and it seems that the last three critical updates I put on
the system were missing or corrupted. So I reinstalled them, then reinstalled
media player 9.) Obviously I had some data corruption going on with the primnary
OS HDD, but why it happened, I haven't a clue, unless it was because of the
shutdown problem. But the shutdown problem started first, so I am at a loss as
to what is actually going on.
